Top Crash Intersection To Get Red Light Cameras
AURORA, Ill. (STMW) - The intersection with the highest number of crashes in west suburban Aurora last year will soon have red light enforcement cameras.
Installation of the cameras on Ogden Avenue at Eola Road began Thursday, and the cameras should be operational in the week of Nov. 21, city officials said. The cameras will record both eastbound and westbound traffic on Ogden Avenue.
After the systems go live, motorists who disregard the red lights will be fined $100.
The intersection on the city's far East Side was the site of 66 crashes in 2009. Through Oct. 31, 49 crashes have occurred at the intersection, making it the third highest spot citywide so far in 2010.
Police said that vehicles entering intersections on a yellow light, or those caught in an intersection when a yellow light turns red, are not considered in violation.
The red light enforcement system is only used to issue tickets for vehicles that do not completely stop at an intersection before turning right on red when a safety violation is observed by an officer reviewing the video, police said.
Other Aurora intersections where the cameras are being used are: New York Street and Farnsworth Avenue; New York and Commons Drive; Farnsworth Avenue and Molitor Road; and New York and Eola.
