Aurora Man Charged With Raping Woman He Met Online; Cops Seek Other Victims
AURORA, Ill. (CBS) -- A case of online dating has turned into a massive sex assault investigation.
CBS 2's Pamela Jones reports police in the western suburbs want to know just how many women may have fallen prey to 37-year-old Derrick D. Chaney, who is charged with raping a woman he met on a dating website earlier this year.
He looks like a guy with a winning smile; the kind of guy who wears a feather in his hat.
But police said he's a player turned predator, and now he's got a mugshot to add to his profile.
Chaney was charged Friday with three counts of criminal sexual assault, and one count each of unlawful restraint and kidnapping. Police said he used a dating website to hook up with a 31-year-old woman from Davenport, Iowa.
Detectives said the two corresponded online, then met at a Motel 6 in Aurora in January. After they met, Chaney allegedly held the woman against her will, and raped her in one of the motel rooms.
Aurora Police Lt. Pete Inda said, "He had sexual relations with her against her will. … Basically, he would not let her leave when she wanted to leave."
Police said Chaney probably ran the same game on other women: meeting them on dating websites like plentyoffish.com or blackpeoplemeet.com. Then he'd meet the women in person at clubs like John Barleycorn, or Drink in Schaumburg.
He'd allegedly show up in a luxury car, and lie about being a wealthy club promoter to reel the women in.
"In fact, he did not have a lot of money, and he made these women pay for a lot of things when they were out with him," Inda said.
Police said they've already spoken to four or five women who had interactions with Chaney. They think there might be more victims in the Chicago area, and are asking other women who may have been victimized to contact (630) 256-5500.
