Auburn's Newton Selected 1st Overall In NFL Draft
CHICAGO (CBS) After winning a Heisman Trophy and a National Championship, Auburn's Cam Newton can add No. 1 overall pick to his resume.
The Carolina Panthers, and former Chicago Bear Ron Rivera, wasted no time in selecting the polarizing Newton.
It's widely accepted that Newton is as talented physically as anyone in the draft, but it's his mental makeup, mechanics and off-field issues that raised some concerns for teams.
During his final season at Auburn, reports arose that his father, Cecil Newton, had shopped his services to Mississippi State. There were also cheating allegations from his time at Florida as well as an incident where Newton stole a fellow student's laptop.
In one season at Auburn, Newton threw for 2,854 yards and 30 touchdowns while rushing 1,473 yards and another 20 touchdowns.
