Attorney For North Chicago Cops: 'Evidence Will Favor' Police In Arrestee's Death
NORTH CHICAGO, Ill. (CBS) -- Demonstrators continued their call for justice Monday for the family of a man beaten to death while in North Chicago police custody, but attorneys for the officers say the whole story hasn't come out.
Family, friends and supporters of Darrin Hanna gathered to rally and continue their search for answers in his case. In highly publicized photos, Hanna has been seen in the hospital bloody and swollen after his arrest by North Chicago police late last year during a domestic call.
He died a week later, and Hanna's family has filed a civil lawsuit against the city.
But an attorney for six of the offices involved in the Hanna arrest says the photos don't tell the whole story.
Laura Scarry pointed to a report from the Lake County State's Attorney's Office in which Hanna allegedly threatened to drown his girlfriend, saying, "Have you ever been baptized (expletive)? Cause you're about to. I should drown your (expletive) in that water."
"I strongly believe the evidence will favor these officers," Scarry told CBS 2's Pamela Jones.
"The officers, they didn't ask for this incident," she said. "They responded to a 9-1-1 call."
