At Least The Fireworks Were Good
A crowd of 36,548 was all set to toast a White Sox victory and then enjoy the post game fire works but Alex Avila turned out to be a real party pooper. The light hitting Avila jumped on the first pitch from JJ Putz and presto bingo the Tigers pulled a victory out of their hat, 3-2.
Putz was Ozzie Guillen's closer Saturday night because Bobby Jenks was unavailable and will be until at least Tuesday. Jenks will work with trainer Herm Schneider as they try and get rid of the spasms in Jenks back. It's also possible that Jenks could go on the disabled list so either Putz or Matt Thornton will have to step up.
Thornton did pitch one inning of scoreless relief Saturday but Putz gave up a leadoff single to Brandon Inge and then one out later Avila hit just his 5th home run on the season. The loss over shadowed another real good start by Edwin Jackson who struck out 11 over his 7 innings of work. And worse yet, the loss drops the Sox 2 games behind Minnesota in the Central Division.
