At Least 5 Dead, 27 Wounded In Weekend Violence
CHICAGO (CBS) -- At least five people were killed and more than two dozen were wounded over the weekend in a rash of shootings that struck nearly every part of the city.
The most recent reported slaying was a gang-related incident that happened in the Clybourn Corridor, not far from the former site of the Cabrini-Green public housing development.
The man was shot in the 1500 block of North Clybourn Avenue at 5:15 p.m., according to police News Affairs Officer Anne Dwyer. He was found shot in the head inside a home, Near North District Sgt. Joe Schmit said.
Schmit said the victim was a known gang member. He was taken in critical condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Schmit said.
According to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office, the victim, Mose Stamps, 23, of an unknown home address, was later pronounced dead.
At 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Cedrick Allen, 44, was shot at 301 S. Lavergne Ave. in the South Austin neighborhood. Allen, of Lynwood, was pronounced dead at 6:15 a.m. Sunday at Mount Sinai Hospital, according to the Medical Examiner's office.
At 9:30 p.m. Saturday, a man's body was found in a home in the 0-99 block of East 101st Place, police said. The man, whose body was decomposed, had died of a gunshot wound in a homicide, according to the Medical Examiner's office.
He was found lying on the floor in the front living room of the vacant home, police said.
At 2:44 a.m. Saturday, a man was found shot in the head in the front yard of a home in the 5000 block of South Drexel Boulevard, police said. Ismail Robinson, 22, of 5123 S. Ingleside Ave., was dead on the scene, the Medical examiner's Office said.
Around 1:12 a.m. Kenneth Sims, 20, was fatally shot in the back in the 1300 block of South Blue Island Avenue, police said. Sims, of the 2700 block of West 26th Street, was pronounced dead at 1:51 a.m. at Stroger Hospital of Cook County, the Medical Examiner's office said.
Meanwhile, at least 27 victims were shot and survived their wounds:
Around 6:30 p.m. Sunday, a 24-year-old man was shot and wounded in the right thigh, in the 5700 block of South Winchester Avenue in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. He was taken in good condition to Holy Cross Hospital.
At 5:50 p.m. Sunday, a17-year-old boy was shot in the leg Sunday during a drive-by shooting as he stood on the sidewalk in the 5300 block of South Campbell Avenue. He was reported in stable condition at Mount Sinai Hospital after the two men in the vehicle shot him.
A 19-year-old man was wounded around 3:50 p.m. Sunday in the 6400 block of South Oakley Avenue in the West Englewood neighborhood. He was shot twice in the right leg, and was reported in stable condition at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
Around 10:24 a.m. Sunday, a 27-year-old woman was shot in the buttocks during a domestic squabble in the 5000 block of West Division Street. The alleged gunman, Donyelle Smith, 26, of the 1600 block of North Monitor Avenue, later fled on foot. But police captured him and prosecutors have charged him with two counts of attempted murder.
At 2:46 a.m. Sunday, a man and woman inside a vehicle in the 4700 block of West West End Avenue were shot by a gunman inside a vehicle that pulled alongside them, police said. The 29-year-old woman was shot in the abdomen area and leg and taken in serious condition to Stroger Hospital, while the 34-year-old man was shot was shot in the leg and taken to the hospital in good condition.
At 2:29 a.m. Sunday, someone shot a 21-year-old man in the leg at 3862 W. Madison St. in the East Garfield Park neighborhood, police said. The victim was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where his condition was not life-threatening.
About 1:50 a.m. Sunday, a man was shot in the leg in the 4800 block of North Sheridan Road in the Uptown neighborhood, police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said. He was taken in good condition to Weiss Memorial Hospital. The Uptown Update blog reported shooting happened just north of the J.J. Peppers convenience store parking lot at Sheridan Road and Lawrence Avenue, and witnesses said four offenders escaped in a Dodge Charger.
Around 1:45 a.m. Sunday, a 20-year-old man was shot in the abdomen in the 4900 block of West Quincy Street, police said. He was initially taken to West Suburban Medical in Oak Park and transferred to Stroger Hospital.
At 1:28 a.m. Sunday, a 44-year-old man sitting in a parked vehicle in the 100 block of West 70th Street was shot in the head and taken in critical condition to Christ Medical Center, police said.
Around 1 a.m. Sunday, a 30-year-old man walking in the 8800 block of South Exchange Avenue was shot in the left ankle and taken in stable condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, police said.
At 12:32 a.m. Sunday, a 31-year-old man in an alley in the 6300 block of South Morgan Street was shot in the lower back, police said.
Around 11:25 p.m. Saturday, a 24-year-old man on the sidewalk in the 5800 block of South Wabash Avenue was shot in the cheek and taken to Stroger Hospital in stable condition, police said.
Also around 11:25 p.m. Saturday, a man was shot in the arm and leg in the 1600 block of East 86th Place, police said. He was taken in good condition to Christ Medical Center.
At 10:55 p.m. Saturday, an 18-year-old man standing on a porch in the 3000 block of East 79th Street was shot by several gunmen on foot, police said. He was taken in stable condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the lower back.
Two men were shot in the abdomen at 10:43 p.m. Saturday, in the 3500 block of West Medill Avenue in the Logan Square neighborhood, police said.
About 9:40 p.m. Saturday in the 4100 block of West West End Avenue, a woman walked into a firehouse with a gunshot wound to the knee, police said. She did not provide details about the shooting, and paramedics took her in good condition to Mount Sinai Hospital.
At 4:23 p.m. Saturday, a man was shot and wounded in a gang-related incident in the 7900 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue. He was shot in the back and taken in serious condition to Advocate Christ, police said.
Around 1:50 a.m. Saturday, a man in his 20s was shot in the back in the 1300 block of West 13th Street, near the site of the old ABLA Homes public housing development, and taken in good condition to the University of Illinois at Chicago Medical Center, police said.
At 1:33 a.m. Saturday, a male was shot in the abdomen area in the 3400 block of North Milwaukee Avenue in the Avondale neighborhood, and taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, police said. His age and condition were not immediately known.
At 12:20 a.m. Saturday, an 18-year-old man was shot in the abdomen area in the 200 block of West 109th Street and taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, police said.
Two men were wounded in a shooting in the North Lawndale neighborhood around 11:52 p.m. Friday. A gunman approached a vehicle in the 1400 block of South Trumbull Avenue and opened fire, leaving the 26-year-old male driver wounded in the chest in good condition, and another 26-year-old man on the street in stable condition with a gunshot wound to the chin. Both were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital.
At 11:05 p.m. Friday, a 15-year-old boy was shot and wounded while standing on the sidewalk in the 5100 block of South Rockwell Street. He was wounded in the forearm and was taken to Holy Cross Hospital, where he was listed in good condition by early Saturday, police said.
A man was shot in the leg around 10:37 p.m. Friday in the 2800 block of West Augusta Boulevard in the Humboldt Park neighborhood. He was taken in good condition to Stroger Hospital, police said.
Around 9:50 p.m. Friday, 17-year-old girl was shot and wounded in the West Englewood neighborhood. She was on the sidewalk in the 6400 block of South Wood Street when shots were fired, police said. She was shot in the face near the mouth area and taken in fair condition to Stroger Hospital of Cook County.
Detectives continue to investigate all the open cases.
