5 People Wounded In West Garfield Park Mass Shooting, Police Say
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Five people were shot Tuesday night in a mass shooting in the West Garfield Park neighborhood.
The shooting happened at 9:20 p.m. in the 3800 block of West Monroe Street.
Upon arriving, officers found that three men and two women had been shot by an unknown person.
One man, 39, was shot once in the groin and was taken to an area hospital in critical condition. A second, age unknown, was shot in the right shoulder and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition was stabilized. The third man's condition was not known late Tuesday.
The women's conditions were also unknown late Tuesday night. One of them was shot in the back.
The Fire Department said two of the victims were taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County, and another was also taken to Mount Sinai.
Late Tuesday, there was no one in custody and Area Four detectives were investigating.
This incident makes four mass shootings in Chicago in just two weeks.
While we're used to seeing and hearing from the grieving and heartbroken family members of the victims, there's another group of people also feeling the effect of these mass shootings: doctors.
"It is definitely true that symptoms of post-traumatic stress and acute stress are high among medical staff, and so we try to pay attention and care for one another. But at the same time, we have a choice. We choose to be here," said Andy Wheeler, a clinical social worker for Cook County Health.
Wheeler works with gunshot victims and their families, helping them deal with the trauma that often comes with gun violence.
"I think it's really important to pay attention to the mental health of our care team we but I never to lose sight that the true victims here are patients and families and their communities," Wheeler said.
