At Least 2 Dead, 3 Wounded In Shootings Overnight In Chicago

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The rain and storms overnight didn't stop a rash of shootings in several parts of the city, which left at least two people dead and three wounded.

Around 12:30 a.m. Friday, a man was found shot in a car parked in the 4100 block of West Chicago Avenue in the East Garfield Park neighborhood.

The victim, identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner's office as Maurice Fletcher, 29, had been shot in the torso and legs. He and was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital where he was later pronounced dead, authorities said.

Fletcher had been driving an Oldsmobile when he was shot at 3759 W. Chicago Ave., according to Harrison District police Lt. John Andrews. He continued driving, but crashed about a block-and-a-half away in the 4100 block of West Chicago Avenue, according to Andrews, who said no one else was in the car.

Around 3:30 a.m., another man was shot and killed in the 800 block of East 79th Street on the edge of the Grand Crossing neighborhood. He was identified as Maurice Thompson, 26, according to the Medical Examiner's office.

Thompson died after suffering multiple gunshot wounds, authorities said.

Earlier in the evening when sun was still shining, a woman was shot and wounded just outside Douglas Park on the city's West Side. The 33-year-old woman was shot around 6:35 p.m. in the 3100 block of West Douglas Boulevard, and taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital in critical condition, police said.

Around 10:15 p.m., a 15-year-old boy was shot in the chest and thighs as he walked along the 6500 block of South Campbell Avenue in the Marquette Park neighborhood. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in serious condition, police said.

At 1:20 a.m., a 17-year-old boy was shot and wounded in the Englewood neighborhood. He was walking in the 6600 block of South Union Avenue when he heard shots and felt pain, police said.

The boy taken in good condition to Stroger Hospital of Cook County with a gunshot wound to the hip, Alfaro said.

The violence also hit the suburbs overnight. Maurice Thomas, 33, was shot around 11:18 p.m. Thursday at 137th Street and Eggleston Avenue in Riverdale, and was later pronounced dead at Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey, police said.

No one was in custody in any of the cases Friday morning.
