At Least 15 Wounded In Weekend Shootings
CHICAGO (CBS) -- At least 15 people were shot and wounded in the city over the weekend, all on the South and Southwest sides.
More than half the victims were teenagers, among them a 14-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl. But no one was killed.
• The violent weekend began at 1:35 a.m. Saturday, when two men were shot and wounded at 79th and Wood streets in the Auburn-Gresham neighborhood, police said.
A 28-year-old man was sitting in a vehicle on the street and talking to a 26-year-old man when two people walked up and fired shots at them, striking both. The two shooters then fled the scene, possibly in a dark colored sport-utility vehicle.
The older victim was shot in the thigh and was listed in stable condition at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, police said. The younger victim suffered a graze wound to the face, and was listed in good condition at Holy Cross Hospital.
• At 2 a.m. Saturday, a man was hit by a vehicle as he walked with a friend in the 1800 block of West 33rd Street in the McKinley Park neighborhood.
The victim did not report the incident to police at the time and went home, where he realized when he woke up later that morning he had been shot in the knee. Police believe that the person who struck the man with the vehicle had also shot him. He was taken in to Stroger Hospital of Cook County, where he was reported in stable condition.
• A man was shot in broad daylight Saturday morning, in the 600 block of West 119th Street in the West Pullman neighborhood. A 19-year-old man was shot in the abdomen at 11:13 a.m., police said.
• A 19-year-old man was shot and wounded, also in broad daylight Saturday, in the Auburn-Gresham neighborhood. He was shot in the legs and buttocks at 11:51 a.m. in the 7900 block of South Laflin Street, police said. The victim was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in an unspecified condition.
Paramedics took the victim in critical condition to Mount Sinai Hospital, according to Fire Media Affairs spokesman Quention Curtis.
• About 7:55 p.m. Saturday, a 20-year-old man was shot and wounded in the 8600 block of South Ingleside Avenue in the Chatham neighborhood. Someone pulled up in a white car and opened fire, according to police.
The victim suffered a gunshot wound and was taken in serious condition to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, police said.
• At 1:56 a.m. Sunday, a man was hospitalized after he was shot in the buttocks, at 65th Street and Yale Avenue in the Hamilton Park neighborhood. The man was shot in the buttocks, according to Gaines. He was taken to an unidentified area hospital and was reported in stable condition, police said.
• At 5:25 a.m. Sunday, a 24-year-old man was shot and critically injured while in a moving vehicle in the Fuller Park neighborhood.
A vehicle with seven people inside was rolling down the 4600 block of South Wentworth Avenue at 5:25 a.m., when someone fired at least one shot at it, striking one of the occupants, according to police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli.
The victim was initially taken in critical condition to Stroger Hospital, Mirabelli said. He was upgraded to stable later Sunday morning.
• The daylight didn't stop the violence on Sunday either. At 3:10 p.m., someone fired multiple shots at a 24-year-old man as he stood outside his home on the 6300 block of South Richmond Street Sunday afternoon, but he suffered just one gunshot wound to the lower right leg and was able to drive himself to nearby Holy Cross Hospital, where he was in good condition, police said.
The gunman was standing in front of his home when someone got out of a maroon-colored vehicle, pulled out a handgun and fired several times at him, police said.
• An hour later at 4:10 p.m. Sunday, a 14-year-old boy was shot and wounded in the 7100 block of South Maplewood Avenue. After seeing a group of males emerge from an alley, the boy heard gunshots and realized he was wounded, police said.
The boy was shot once in the right buttock, and was taken to Holy Cross Hospital in good condition, police said.
• Around 5:20 p.m. Sunday, a 16-year-old boy was critically wounded when he was shot during an argument on the 7300 block of South Constance Avenue.
The victim and another person got into an argument, and the other person took out a gun and shot the boy in the abdomen, police said. The victim was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition, according to police.
• About 7 p.m. Sunday, an 18-year-old man was sitting in a vehicle on the 3800 block of South Ellis Avenue when two people walked up, one with a handgun, police said. The gunman fired several times into the vehicle, striking the victim once in the shoulder. The victim was taken in good condition to Mercy Hospital.
• About 8:45 p.m. Sunday, a 16-year-old boy was seriously wounded when he was shot in the chest while walking on the 600 block of East 65th Street.
The boy was walking down the street when several people approached, and someone took out a gun and opened fire, striking him in the chest, police said. He was taken in serious condition to Stroger Hospital, police said.
• About 9:30 p.m. Sunday, a 17-year-old girl was shot in the Auburn-Gresham neighborhood. She was a passenger in a vehicle in the 7800 block of South Bishop Street when she was shot and wounded in the back, police said.
The vehicle moved to 80th Street and Loomis Boulevard, where police were notified, and the girl was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where she remained in serious condition as of Monday morning, police said.
The male driver of the vehicle had been involved in a fight earlier in the evening with several other people in the area, but no one was in custody as of early Monday, police said.
• Finally, about 11:15 p.m. Sunday, a man in his 20s was shot in the 1500 block of West 82nd Street, police said. He was struck in the leg and torso and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center where he was listed in stable condition early Monday, police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer said.
