At Least 1 Hurt In Lake Shore Drive Crash
CHICAGO (CBS) - At least one person is hurt following a crash on the treacherous Oak Street curve on Lake Shore Drive Monday morning.
At 6:20 a.m., a vehicle struck a wall in the southbound lanes near 1000 North Lake Shore Drive and two other vehicles may also be involved in the crash, according to police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli, citing preliminary information.
At least one person was injured and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Mirabelli said.
The curve has long been the most dangerous stretch of Lake Shore Drive. In an average year, it sees well over 100 accidents, CBS 2's Mike Parker reported in 2006.
In the past decade, yellow warning signs were mounted on the curve, instructing drivers to slow down to 25 mph. When these signs had little effect, dozens of pavement stripes were laid down to get drivers' attention.
Separately Monday morning, a crash involving one vehicle was also reported in the 5600 block of West 55th Street, just west of Midway International Airport, at 5:50 a.m., although there are no injuries, Mirabelli said.
Frost and patches of black ice may be on area roadways due to a dip into below freezing temperatures overnight, said Ben Deubelbeissi, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.
Mirabelli could not confirm either of the incidents were weather-related, although icy conditions were reported in the Chicago metro area.
