Armed Standoff In Northbrook Ends Peacefully, Man In Custody
NORTHBROOK, Ill. (STMW) -- A 51-year-old Northbrook man is in custody tonight following a three-hour-plus standoff with police that began when he fired a gun in the home during an argument with his parents.
The standoff prompted a massive response from police -- including armored vehicles from the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System -- when the man's father told police his son possessed a large amount of weaponry, said Northbrook Police Chief Chuck Wernick at an evening press conference.
The incident took place on the 2500 block of Salceda Drive, and began at 3:30 p.m. when the 51-year-old fired a gun into a wall in the home during a heated verbal argument with his parents, Wernick said. There is no indication, Wernick said, that the gun was fired at either of the parents. The father left the home after the gunshot and came to the police station to notify them.
When police arrived they were able to persuade the mother, who was not being held against her will, to leave the home, Wernick said. Police also evacuated nearby Maple Junior High and Glenbrook North High School, cancelling after-school activities there. Police also evacuated neighboring residences.
At 7 p.m., police were able to persuade the man to leave the home peacefully, Wernick said. No one was injured in the incident and the man in custody is being medically evaluated this evening.
The man, as yet unidentified, has not been charged, Wernick said, though he expected that a decision on charges would be made Friday morning. Wernick said police also are in the process of confiscating all the weapons in the home.
Emergency officials closed off numerous residential streets south of Glenbrook North during the standoff and directed traffic on Willow Road away from St. Peter Community Church, 2700 Willow Road, which was used as a staging area for the large number of police personnel called to the scene. Besides the NIPAS vehicles and a helicopter, police cars from as far away as Franklin Park, Mundelein and Round Lake Beach responded to the scene.
