Armed NW Indiana Man Nabs Teen Carjackers
HAMMOND, Ind. (STMW) -- A northwest Indiana man who was out walking a dog Saturday night helped nab the two boys, who were running from a stolen SUV.
The 14- and 15-year-old boys, along with another teen, had allegedly hijacked a 1999 Toyota 4-Runner near the Indiana-Michigan border in Michigan City, when about 8:45 p.m. an Indiana State Police Trooper began pursuing the stolen SUV on westbound I-80, a press release from Indiana State Police said.
The boys eventually ran the 4-Runner up onto a curb at 165th Street and Kennedy Avenue in Hammond and took off running, the release said. The trooper chased the driver who went one way, eventually losing sight of him.
The two other boys ran to house where a man was in his yard with his dog saw what was going on and apparently made them aware that he was armed, the release said. The two boys then lay on the ground and waited until Hammond Police arrived and arrested them, the release said.
The boys, both from Michigan City, were taken to the Lake County Juvenile Center in Crown Point and were charged with resisting arrest, criminal trespassing and armed carjacking.
The driver of the carjacking was not injured, the released.
