Argument At Evanston Football Practice Leads To Stabbing

EVANSTON (CBS) -- An argument between two women -- relatives of players on a youth football team -- ended with one stabbing the other as the team practiced at a north suburban high school field Tuesday.

The victim was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries and the woman who allegedly stabbed her has been charged with aggravated battery.

About 7:50 p.m. Tuesday, Evanston police responded to Evanston Township High School at 1600 Dodge Ave. for a reported stabbing, a release from police said.

Officers found the victim in the rear of the school near the running track, with three non-life-threatening stab wounds to her back and left shoulder.

Police learned the victim and Adria Joi Watkins, who have known each other for 10 years, had gotten into an argument over the phone earlier in the day over a mutual male acquaintance, police said.

The victim later went to the school to watch a relative during football practice, where Watkins confronted her and they began arguing again, police said.

The verbal dispute escalated into a physical confrontation, with Watkins stabbing the victim with a small kitchen-type knife, according to police.

Watkins, 36, of Evanston, was taken into custody later Tuesday and charged with one felony count of aggravated battery.

The school district said no Evanston Township students were involved and the adults involved are not associated with the school. The Evanston Chargers, a community-run youth football team, was playing on the field behind the school's track at the time.
