Are They Starting To Boycott?
The crowds have been diminishing at Wrigley this season and the smallest one in quite a spell was on hand Tuesday night. There were empty seats all over the place with an announced crowd of just over 33,000. Now that may be a good attendance elsewhere but it's far below the standard that has been set here recently. The bleachers were less then half full and by the time the game was over the park looked like it used to back in the 1980's.
There really wasn't much reason for those in attendance to cheer. The Cubs AGAIN failed to come up with any big hits as they lost 1-0 to San Diego. And if you're keeping score at home that's now 17 losses in their last 22 games. Aramis Ramirez continued with his brutal season of stranding baserunners. Lou Piniella wouldn't call it a fluke year for Ramirez but definitely said it was an "off" one.
Randy Wells pitched well but not good enough as he allowed a first inning run on a ground out. Wells is now 5-11 and pitching for a spot in next years rotation over the final 6 weeks of the season. This year has been hard to watch for Cub fans but the bigger story ultimately may be that fewer fans are watching.
