Archive: Mike Ditka Hired To Coach The Chicago Bears
CHICAGO (CBS) -- On this day in 1982, Mike Ditka signed a contract to coach the Chicago Bears.
From the CBS 2 archives, here's the coverage by Jeannie Morris, including some great quotes from defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan, who talks about not having an ego and that he and Ditka would get along just fine.
It has been widely reported that the two never got along and were at the center of a coaching power struggle, essentially orchestrated by Bears owner George Halas.
In fact, NFL.com ranks their battle as No. 3 among NFL feuds.
Three years after the contract was signed, Ditka and Ryan were both hoisted off the field after winning Super Bowl XX.
