Applications Up 5 Percent At U Of I

URBANA, Ill. (CBS/WBBM) -- The University of Illinois increased tuition for the coming school year, but still, the school says applications are up 5 percent.

As WBBM Newsradio 780's Dave Marsett reports, university officials say about 28,700 students applied for the freshman class next fall – an increase of 1,500 from 2010, and 6,000 from five years ago.

Undergraduate admissions director Stacey Kostell tells the Champaign News-Gazette 19,000 of this year's applicants were admitted. It won't be known how many of those students will choose to go to school until Monday of next week, which is the deadline for students to respond, the News-Gazette reported.

The university says that number has been dropping for years.

Tuition for the U of I flagship campus in Urbana-Champaign is now almost $14,000 a year. It rose 9.5 percent this year and is scheduled to rise by 6.9 percent next fall.

Students keep the same tuition rate for four years.
