Antioch High School Mourns Loss Of Student Killed In Plane Crash
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Antioch Community High School is in mourning today - after the death of a 14-year-old freshman and her father, killed in a plane crash yesterday in southeastern Wisconsin.
"It's really a shocking tragedy for the entire school," said John Whitehurst, the principal of Antioch Community High School, where Nicole Parfitt was a freshman.
This was her first semester of high school - and she made the school's dance team.
"This morning, one thing we did immediately was to pull the dance team together in a separate room and give them a chance to talk to one of our school psychologists, as well as the coaches, to give them a chance to process their grief and hopefully understand it a little bit better."
Nicole Parfitt died in the crash of the small plane, along with her father, 50-year-old Todd Parfitt of Antioch.
Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Lynn Lunsford says a single-engine Grumman AA1 crashed while trying to land at the Burlington, Wis., airport just before 1:30 p.m. Sunday. He says local authorities told the FAA both people on board died.
Lunsford says the Burlington airport has no control tower, and the pilot was not in contact with air-traffic controllers when then plane went down in a cornfield.
