CHICAGO (CBS) — After enjoying unseasonably mild weather Sunday and Monday, another cold snap blows in starting Tuesday bringing the coldest air of the season.

We are tracking a piece of the polar vortex that is record-cold for this early in the winter season, forecast to dive our way from Canada.

The coldest air rolls in on strong northwest winds late Wednesday and Thursday, dropping air temperatures Thursday morning into the single-digits with dangerously cold wind chills -10 to -20 degrees.

While this will not be a significant snow-maker, some wind-driven snow showers are expected during the day on Wednesday which may lead to minor travel problems and lowered visibility.

As temperatures quickly rebound late in the week, we are closely watching the potential of another round of precipitation Friday into Saturday. This may begin as snow or freezing rain, then quickly transitions to liquid rain. Stay tuned for updates as the time approaches.
