More Gunfire On Lake Shore Drive; May Shootings, Murders Increase Over 2015
(CBS) – Police are investigating another shooting along Chicago's Lake Shore Drive as they release crime statistics for May that show a rise in the number of murders and shootings, compared to 2015.
CBS 2's Mike Puccinelli reports from the lakefront drive, where the latest round of violence happened.
We are near division and LSD where once again there has been a shooting on this iconic roadway.
It happened around 2 a.m. Wednesday. A 22-year-old was driving north when someone in an SUV pulled alongside his vehicle and opened fire, police said.
The driver, whom police say is a gang member, was not injured.
Earlier, in South Chicago, May came to violent end when a 15-year-old was shot dead on E. 89th Street. The teen was a passenger in a car when a white sedan pulled alongside it and someone inside opened fire, hitting the boy in the chest.
Police say the teen boy did not have any gang ties.
In May, there were 66 murders in Chicago -- up from 47 in the same month last year. There were 318 shootings with nearly 400 victims – up from 264 shootings and 318 victims in May 2015.
Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson tells CBS 2 he's confident his department can turn things around.
"I still believe in this city. I still believe in this police department, and we will at some point hold these individuals accountable for all this gun violence," he says.
On a positive note, police say May's murder and gun arrests were up by four and 8 percent, respectively, compared with the same period one year ago.
