Angels Sign Trout To 1-Year, $1-Million Deal
(CBS) One of baseball's best players will be playing for $1 million this season.
The Angels and star outfielder Mike Trout agreed to a one-year, $1-million deal, the Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday. It's the largest pre-arbitration contract in MLB history, according to ESPN.
The deal enables the Angels to avoid a luxury-tax assessment this offseason and sets the stage for a long-term extension in 2015. Recently, talk of a possible six-year, $150-million extension for Trout was in the news, but the Angels would probably would even like to lock up the 22-year-old phenom for even longer. The proposed six-year deal would've allow the Angels to buy out his first three years of free agency and allow Trout to become a free agent at 29, the Times reported.
Because Trout has fewer than three years of MLB service, he has little leverage in contract negotiations at this point with the Angels.
Trout has finished second in the AL MVP voting in each of his first two full seasons.
