Angelo: Wins Are The Bottom Line

Jerry Angelo made it very clear. Wins, and only wins, will lead to credibility in the NFL. And wins are the ultimate judge of success in the league.

"In our business it's all about credibility," Angelo said in his press conference on Thursday, when asked if this season has validated Lovie Smith as a head coach. "I felt like we lost some credibility, we did. It just goes with the territory. We weren't getting the job done."

Angelo made it clear that this season hasn't changed what he though about Lovie and the staff. He's always felt good about them, and the offseason additions to the staff were made to help restore the credibility that had been lost. But in terms of the public perception of Lovie, Angelo said that it all comes down to wins.

"Again, the bottom line is the bottom line," Angelo said. "You have to win football games. You have to win your division. That's what creates credibility, it's not personality."

Based on Angelo's definition of credibility, Lovie and his staff could have easily been fired after last season. But unlike most, Angelo knew Lovie could turn things around this season.

"We felt confident that everything we needed to do, we can do this year," Angelo said. "This has not surprised us."
