Amtrak Train Collides With Bacon-Loaded Semi In Southwest Suburbs
(CBS) – An Amtrak passenger train on its way to Chicago collided Friday afternoon with a semi-tractor-trailer truck in southwest suburban Wilmington.
The incident occurred around 4 p.m. at North River Road west of Illinois Route 53 in Wilmington. The Texas Eagle hit a truck that was obstructing the tracks, according to a statement from Amtrak. The truck was severed from its trailer, and its load -- packages of bacon -- were scattered all over the scene.
There were 203 passengers aboard; no one was injured, Amtrak said.
Video from Chopper 2 showed the trailer lying on its side, and people standing around site. Passengers later were loaded onto yellow school buses as Amtrak arranged their transportation to Chicago.
Once the tracks and the train were inspected, the train was on its way to Union Station.
The Texas Eagle operates daily between San Antonio, Texas and Chicago.
