Amtrak Restores Some Trains Between Chicago, East Coast
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Amtrak continues to make strides toward restoring full service linking Chicago and the East Coast, but a spokesman said it is being done incrementally.
Service resumed Thursday on the Capitol Limited, linking Chicago and Washington, D.C., and spokesman Marc Magliari said riders can connect in Washington with Amtrak Northeast Corridor service to New York.
Likewise, the Lake Shore Limited is back in operation between Chicago and Boston, but the leg between Albany-Renssalaer (N.Y.) and New York Penn Station remains out of service.
Amtrak President Joseph Boardman said in a conference call Thursday afternoon that Amtrak hoped to restore partial service Friday between Boston and New York on the Northeast Corridor.
Another Amtrak train that normally links Chicago with Washington and New York, the Cardinal, continues to run only between Chicago and Indianapolis, Magliari said.
Amtrak continues to work on removing water from the tunnels under the Hudson River that lead in and out of Penn Station, and to repair signal systems and power distribution; all trains that run in and out of Penn Station are electrically-operated.
