Alinea Takes No. 6 Among World's Best Restaurants
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Chicago's Alinea has won a new distinction, this time as the highest-ranked U.S. eatery on the list of the 50 Best Restaurants in the World.
The next U.S. restaurant on the list, Per Se at the Time Warner Centre in New York, doesn't come in until No. 10.
Topping the list is Noma in Copenhagen, Denmark, for the second year in a row. Coming next, in order, are El Celler de Can Roca in Girona, Spain, Mugaritz in Errenteria, Spain, Osteria Francescana in Modena, Italy; and the Fat Duck in Berkshire, England.
Chef Grant Achatz operates Alinea, and his ultramodern cooking style at the restaurant has come to define the molecular gastronomy movement.
The James Beard Foundation honored Achatz with its award as the nation's top chef in 2008.
That year, Achatz was diagnosed with Stage 4 tongue cancer and underwent aggressive treatment to save his life and sense of taste. By the end of the year, he was cancer free.
In 2006, Gourmet magazine named Alinea the best restaurant in America.
