Loyola Students Warned Of Two Recent Armed Robberies Near Campus
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A night after news of two rapes hit campus, students at Loyola University were being warned of a pair of armed robberies.
CBS 2's Mike Puccinelli reports two robbers held up a Loyola student on Tuesday in an alley just off the school's Rogers Park campus.
Loyola senior Victoria Mronga was walking home in the same area Wednesday night.
"It's not safe at all for anyone," she said. "Whatever gender, whatever age you are, you can be held up."
The university has issued an alert to its 16,000 students, informing them of the holdup, which happened in the 6700 block of North Greenview Avenue.
One of the suspects displayed a handgun during the robbery.
Two weeks earlier, another Loyola student was robbed a couple blocks away.
In that robbery, a female student was held up by two robbers. One showed a silver handgun, and demanded that she hand over her money and mobile phone.
She did, and they ran off.
Learning of the robberies has stolen Urvi Patel's sense of security.
"It's kind of scary, because I have late night classes, and that could happen to any student," Patel said.
Patel, a sophomore, studies statistics, and said she takes precautions to try and ensure that she doesn't become one.
"I call Late Rides at night, so the university's van could drive me to my apartment," she said.
Mronga said her apartment was robbed last year, so she's been vigilant ever since.
"I try to walk fast, and make sure to listen if there's footsteps behind me," she said.
