Committee OKs Earlier Curfew For Younger Kids

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Chicago's curfew for juveniles is one step closer to changing.
Newsradio 780's Mary Francis Bragiel reports the a city council committee has voted to get kids inside the house a half hour earlier.
Last year, the Chicago police department issued 19,500 curfew violations. Ald, Jim Balcer, who chairs the Committee on Public Safety, called that figure impressive.
The amended ordinance means those kids age 12 and under would have to be in the house by 8:30 p.m. during the weekday and 9 p.m. on the weekend. Ald. Toni Foulkes, the lead sponsor. says an increase in crime did not prompt the proposed amendment
The full City Council will vote on the issue next week.
Two years ago, retired Mayor Richard M. Daley moved the curfew for those under 17 to 10 p.m. weekdays and 11 p.m. on weekends.
Before that, it had been 10:30 p.m. on weekdays at 11:30 p.m. on weekends for children under 17. CBS 2 reported there were 26,500 curfew violations that year.
