Alderman's Son Among Youngest Delegates At DNC

CHICAGO (CBS) -- One of the youngest Illinois delegates to the Democratic National Convention said his love of politics came from his father, who is one of the most powerful Democrats in Chicago.

Twenty-year-old Travis Burke has been to conventions before with his father, Ald. Edward Burke (14th), who chairs the City Council Finance Committee, but this was the younger Burke's first as a delegate.

The Hillary Clinton delegate said he hopes he can be a spokesman for young voters.

"I believe this is an election where I've seen more support by young people coming out for candidates; whether it's Bernie [Sanders], or it's Clinton; but mainly for Bernie. I've never seen such a movement where young people are activists, and just want their voice to be heard through protests or rallies, and this is kind of an opportunity to hear them speak," he said.

The DePaul University junior said some of his friends are not as interested in politics as he is, but he's working on them, and his father couldn't be more proud.

The younger Burke said there are a lot of education issues to be discussed at the convention in Philadelphia. He also said young voters need to not be discouraged by the political process.

"A lot of young people think that things can just happen fast. They want everything fast. … Well, it's not all that simple. You have to have patience, and just keep on education about political things, and how politics work," he said.

His father said it was a thrill to have his son taking an interest in politics, and serving as a Democratic Party delegate.
