Alderman Punched During Confrontation In Auburn Gresham
(STMW) -- Ald. David Moore (17th) was punched while trying to disperse prostitutes on a block of his ward early Sunday in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood on the South Side.
Moore was driving home from another incident in his ward when he saw the group soliciting in the 7500 block of South Peoria and stopped to ask them to disperse about 3 a.m., according to a statement from a spokesperson. Moore had earlier received a call from a resident complaining about the group.
Moore identified himself as an alderman but the group refused to believe him and started yelling at him and hitting him, striking his arm, according to the statement. Moore called police and the group started running away.
Police confirmed a 49-year-old man called 911 to report he was battered on that block during an argument about 3 a.m. One suspect ran away but was later arrested.
Charges were pending against the 22-year-old man Sunday, police said.
"In an effort to make the 17th Ward a desirable place to live for everyone, we have to address all unwanted criminal activity. There are no victimless crimes," Moore said in a statement.
