Ald. Stone Gives Out Turkeys In West Rogers Park
CHICAGO (CBS) - To celebrate his 83rd birthday Wednesday, Ald. Bernard Stone (50th) gave out 83 free Thanksgiving turkeys to residents of his West Rogers Park ward.
Stone announced earlier this week that he was giving away the turkeys Wednesday morning in the parking lot of Warren Park, at Pratt Boulevard and Western Avenue.
One turkey per family was available, but only for residents of the 50th Ward.
"Thanksgiving Day is a time set aside to think about all that we have to be thankful for, and to express the joy we feel for our blessings," Stone said on his website. "For this Thanksgiving, (and to celebrate my birthday), I would like to express my gratitude to friends, family, and 50th Ward residents by giving back to my community."
Stone has served in the City Council since 1973. He is the council's elder statesman and second longest-serving member.
Characterizing himself as still being "full of pee and vinegar," Stone said in September that he would run for another term in office next year. He also accused Mayor Richard M. Daley of "abandoning ship" by deciding not to run for reelection.
Stone said he believes the next mayor will need to draw on the knowledge of veteran aldermen who have expertise in city finances.
