Alcohol Goes On Sale At Dominick's
(CBS) -- Bottles of wine and liquor were flying off the shelves Monday as closing Dominick's stores began selling the remaining liquor supplies at 30 percent off.
One shopper said she's sad to see the stores go but got some good deals on the rest of the inventory.
"I bought $1,500 worth of wine for fifty percent off," she told Newsradio WBBM.
Beginning Friday, remaining alcohol at participating stores will be even cheaper: 50 percent off.
Despite Monday's snowy weather, the parking lot of the Dominick's at Division and Clybourn was as crowded as it might be on the day before Thanksgiving.
Inside, the shelves were largely empty or heavily picked through, with "50 percent off" signs hanging every few feet.
The Dominick's closings mean more than 6,000 layoffs in the Chicago area, but employees can re-apply for new jobs with the new owners.
Dominick's parent company, Safeway, will close all of its stores here by Dec. 28 and exit the Chicago market.
Some suburban Dominick's stores have been sold to competitor Roundy's and will be transformed into new Mariano's grocery stores. The company that owns Jewel purchased four Dominick's locations.
