After School Closing, Jesse Owens Honored With Name On Different Building
Jesse Owens Honored With Name On School
(CBS) -- The name Jesse Owens is once again on the front door of a Chicago public school.
WBBM's Nancy Harty reports.
After Jess Owens Community Academy in West Pullman was closed last summer, relatives of the Olympic Gold Medalist were disappointed to see his name torn off the building.
It's now written in gold and blue outside a different school just blocks away.
Gloria Owens Hemphill and her two sisters attended the renaming ceremony on Friday.
"Today is just a day I'll never forget," she said.
The Chicago Board of Education approved the name change last fall. The name-change ceremony comes nearly 34 years to the day that Owens died.
