Accused 124-MPH Driver Has Battery, DUI, High-Speed Convictions
NAPERVILLE, Ill. (STMW) -- The young Naperville man arrested last weekend and charged with driving at a speed of 124 mph while drunk has at least two excessive speeding convictions in his past, and is currently on supervision in a 2012 case of drunken-driving, the Naperville Sun is reporting.
Additionally, 24-year-old Konnor W. Burns has two cases pending for speeding tickets he received in July and August, according to DuPage County Circuit Court records. He also was sentenced five years ago to 60 days in DuPage County Jail, after being found guilty of battering an acquaintance in downtown Naperville, court records revealed.
Burns and his father, William A. Burns, remain free on bond in the most recent incident, which came to a head just after 2 a.m. Sept. 7 at their home on the 1000 block of Sheringham Drive, in the Brighton Ridge area of central Naperville. The Sun broke the story on Wednesday.
Konnor Burns is charged with driving under the influence, reckless driving, resisting a peace officer and driving at a speed of 124 mph on a 45-mph stretch of Plainfield-Naperville Road not far from the family home. William Burns, 60, is accused of lying to police in claiming he, and not his son, had been behind the wheel of the allegedly speeding, 2011 Dodge Charger.
Court records showed Konnor Burns has been convicted at least nine times in seven years of speeding and other crimes in DuPage County and Will County.
Elmhurst police charged him on or about Feb. 10, 2012 with two counts of DUI and one count of improper lane use. Records indicated he was subsequently found guilty of drunken driving.
A judge in June 2012 ordered Burns to attend DUI school and placed him on 18 months of court supervision, according to records. That period of supervision does not end for another three months, a potential complication that might have been what prompted his father to try to take the blame for last weekend's trouble.
An Illinois State Police trooper on or about July 10 ticketed Burns for driving 26 to 30 mph over the posted speed limit, records revealed. A DuPage County deputy sheriff did likewise less than a month later, issuing Burns a ticket on or about Aug. 5 for driving 15 to 20 mph over the limit, records showed. Both of those cases remain open.
Burns also was arrested and charged with speeding 40 mph or more over the posted limit in July 2008 in an area of Naperville that lies in Will County; and in January 2012 in another case involving Illinois State Police. Records indicated he was convicted both times, placed on supervision and ordered by judges to perform community service work.
He also was placed on supervision and fined for speeding tickets he received in August 2006, January 2007 and August 2012 in different parts of DuPage County, according to records.
Burns' most serious brush with the law occurred on Aug. 17, 2007, when he was charged with aggravated battery in a public place.
The then-18-year-old Burns beat and seriously injured another teen near the northeast corner of Chicago Avenue and Washington Street in downtown Naperville during a dispute over a girl. Court records showed a judge in May 2008 found him guilty of the crime, sentenced him to 60 days in jail and placed him on two years of probation.
Burns also was convicted in September 2006 of possession of less than 30 grams of marijuana in Naperville; and in May 2007 of a misdemeanor charge of possession of drug paraphernalia, also in Naperville. He was ordered to perform public service work and placed on court supervision in each case, records indicated.
