Abreu, Sale Get Nods From Players Association
(CBS) -- Chicago White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu has been named the Players Choice American League Outstanding Rookie, while left-hander Chris Sale also was announced as a finalist for AL Outstanding Pitcher.
Those were among the local honors in the Players Choice Awards presented by the Major League Baseball Players Association.
It marks the second AL Rookie of the Year award for Abreu, who also was honored by the Sporting News on Oct. 20.
Abreu, 27, was named to the AL All-Star team, the fifth White Sox rookie to accomplish that feat, and was named AL Player of the Month in April and July and AL Rookie of the Month in April, June and July. He is the first White Sox player to win a Players Choice award since Adam Dunn was named AL Comeback Player of the Year following the 2012 season.
Sale, 25, went 12-4 with a 2.17 ERA and 208 strikeouts in 26 starts this season.
BBWAA award finalists will be announced Tuesday. The Jackie Robinson Rookies of the Year will be named next Monday, and Cy Young winners will be named on Nov. 12.
