Sox's Abreu, Ramirez And Cubs' Castro Named All-Stars
(CBS) -- First baseman Jose Abreu and shortstop Alexei Ramirez of the White Sox and shortstop Starlin Castro of the Cubs have been named All-Stars. All three will be reserves in the game, which will be held July 15 in Minneapolis.
Abreu has earned the honor in his rookie season, hitting .276 with 69 RBIs and tying for the league lead in home runs with 27.
Abreu will be joined on the American League squad by Ramirez, a fellow Cuban. Ramirez is hitting .286 with eight home runs and 41 RBIs and will be making his first All-Star appearance.
Castro returns to the National League All-Star team for the third time in his career. He previously made the team in 2011 and 2012. Castro, 24, is hitting .287 with 11 home runs and 51 RBIs this season.
Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo is among the players who can be voted in by the fans for the final spot on the NL roster. Rizzo, 24, is hitting .276 with 17 home runs and 45 RBIs.
White Sox left-hander Chris Sale is also on the final fan ballot in the AL. The two-time All Star is 8-1 with a 2.16 ERA. Sale was the winning pitcher in last year's 3-0 win by the American League. His absence from the roster to this point is likely due to his missing a month with an injury.
Jeff Samardzija, who the Cubs traded to the Oakland Athletics on Friday, was named a member of the NL All-Star team but will be inactive for the game because he is now on an AL team.
