Police Identify Baby Abandoned Behind Matteson Apartment Complex
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Police in south suburban Matteson said they have identified a baby found abandoned behind an apartment building Thursday night, but are still investigating how the infant ended up there.
At approximately 10 p.m. Thursday, officers were dispatched to the 3700 block of 214th Street and Old Plank Trail after a resident found the baby crying near a dumpster.
A male infant, approximately 6 to 9 months old, was found in a wooded area, buckled into a car seat sitting on the ground behind the apartments.
The baby appeared to be in good health, but had a soiled diaper and wet socks. It is unknown how long the infant was left alone.
The baby was transported to the hospital for a medical evaluation.
Friday afternoon, police announced investigators believe they had identified the child and multiple family members. Authorities did not release their names.
"Detectives are attempting to uncover the circumstances surrounding this incident," police said in a statement.
The baby has been turned over to Department of Child Family Services for temporary placement.
"Matteson Detectives and DCFS are currently investigating the case. The important fact right now is that the child is safe and being cared for, and the child and family members have been identified," police said.
Anyone with information on the case should call Matteson police at 708-503-3130.
