Sam Foster is the firefighter who was charged with the welding for the memorial.
"It's a privilege to be able to work on that," he said.
Foster was attending a class on firefighting techniques when the second plane struck the World Trade Center, and he realized at that point, it was no accident.
A total of 343 New York firefighters died that day.
"This is not just a job. It's the traditions, and everything that's handed down from years and years of service, that was just broken that day," Foster said.
Foster says he wants those who see the monument to stop and think. He says the attacks are something he never hopes to see again.
The memorial is set to be unveiled Sunday outside the Des Plaines City Hall, at 1420 Miner St.
