The Cook County Medical Examiner says 90-year-old Josephine Kestian was strangled and had abrasions on her face and neck - her death ruled a homicide.
Investigators say there was no obvious sign of a struggle.
Wanda Sinder was Josephine Kestian's neighbor for more than 30 years.
"She knew my husband Michael and she made bread and she'd always send him some bread... She was a good person. We're very shocked."
Sinder says she wants to know whether there was a break-in at the home. "We're not being told," she says, "and I do feel it is our right to know."
Sinder says Kestian lived with her son, who took care of her and would sometimes take her to church.
She says Kestian had worked as a waitress years ago.
