8th Grader Bakes 2 Pies For Mayor Emanuel

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Mayor Rahm Emanuel has two homemade pies for his Thanksgiving dinner -- made by an eighth-grader at the South Side's Namaste Charter School.

WBBM Newsradio's Bob Roberts was on hand when they arrived at the school, at 3737 S. Paulina St. in the McKinley Park neighborhood.

The baker, Giselle Sanchez, is shy and soft-spoken. But she says she has been cooking up a storm since the age of 8.

"When I was small, my aunt – I would go to her house and we would different kinds of cookies and brownies and everything," she said.

For the past two months, Giselle has been mentored by MK the Restaurant pastry chef Tony Galzin, who says she seized the opportunity when it was given.

"She was like, 'Yeah, let's do it!' Come up with things she wanted to bake, and I'd give her little homework assignments to find what fruit is in season, and what can we make with that? And she did a great job of it," Galzin said.

Mayor Emanuel said, "Wow!" when he saw the finished pumpkin and apple pies, then asked Giselle if she makes pecan pie.

Giselle has not made pecan pie yet, but Emanuel told her if she tries one, he'll help bake it.
