88-Year-Old Couple Renews Vows On Valentine's Day

ELK GROVE VILLAGE, Ill. (WBBM) -- On this Valentine's Day, a couple married for more than 60 years renewed their vows at the suburban retirement home where they live.

As WBBM Newsradio 780's Regine Schlesinger reports, Jeanine and Ed Gorka, both 88, knew each other as children. But early on, they didn't like each other very much.

"We fought," Jeanine said. "He had a bicycle. We were about 11 years old, and I said to him, 'Can I ride your bicycle?' And he said, 'I don't have girls touch my bike.'"

When they met again after Ed returned from serving in World War II, over a two-year courtship, Jeanine learned to like him. They were married in 1950.

What was the secret to their long and happy marriage? Ed Gorka's answer didn't mince words.

"Plenty of sex," he said.

To which Jeanine Gorka replied, "Dirty old man! But he was right!"

The Gorkas renewed their vows at the Alexian Village of Elk Grove retirement community in Elk Grove Village. Their son served as best man, and their daughter as maid of honor.

Is there any difference between this and their wedding ceremony? Well, Ed Gorka is on a scooter, and Jeanine is in a wheelchair, but more than 60 years later, the love and devotion still are there.
