8 Students From 2 High Schools Get Sick After Eating Brownies, Gummies
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Eight students from high schools on the Far South and Southeast sides got sick after eating brownies and gummies on Wednesday.
At 11:10 a.m., three students from Epic Academy, at 8225 S. Houston Ave., were taken to South Shore Hospital after eating brownies, the Fire Department said.
A CFD spokesman did not know their ages or genders.
At 12:15 p.m., five students from Fenger High School, 11220 S. Wallace St., ate gummies and were taken to Roseland Community Hospital, the Fire Department said.
Those students were three boys and two girls, all 16, the Fire Department said.
Brownies and gummies are, of course, two edible items that are often made with marijuana, but it was not specified what was in the food items distributed Wednesday.
For the Fenger incident, police said "candy infused with an unknown substance" was involved.
Fenger also released a notification to parents: "The safety of your children is always our top priority, which is why we must inform you of an incident that took place at school today. We received reports that a small number of students ingested an unknown substance in the form of what appeared to be candy, and as a precaution, we transported them to the hospital to receive medical care. We immediately notified the Chicago Police Department and the parents of the students who were confirmed as impacted. We are handling this situation in accordance with CPS policy."
