8 Killed, 45 Wounded In Weekend Shootings
CHICAGO (STMW) -- Eight people were killed — including a 14-year-old boy — and at least 45 others were wounded in weekend shootings across Chicago.
The latest homicide happened Sunday night in Roseland on the Far South Side.
Officers responding to a call of shots fired about 9:40 p.m. in the 10100 block of South Calumet found a 43-year-old man unresponsive on the ground with a gunshot wound to the abdomen, according to Chicago Police.
He was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he later was pronounced dead. His name was withheld Monday morning.
Just over an hour earlier, a 37-year-old man was gunned down in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side.
About 8:20 p.m., Phillip Floro was walking with a friend in the 1600 block of North Central when he heard a shot and realized he'd been struck in the abdomen, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner's office.
Floro, of the 3000 block of West Franklin, was taken to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, where he died at 9:16 p.m., authorities said.
Investigators think the shooting was gang-related.
Sunday morning, 18-year-old Deionte D. Harris was shot to death in Auburn Gresham on the South Side.
He was found with wounded to the face and thigh in the 8400 block of South Hermitage at 10:35 a.m., authorities said.
Harris, of the 8200 block of South Bishop, was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 11:05 a.m.
Another man was found shot dead earlier Sunday morning in the West Pullman neighborhood on the Far South Side.
About 5:25 a.m., officers responding to a call of shots fired in the 11700 block of South LaSalle found a 31-year-old man unresponsive inside a car parked in an alley.
He had been shot multiple times and was taken to Roseland Community Hospital, where he later was pronounced dead, police said. His name had not yet been released Sunday afternoon.
About three hours earlier, six people were shot — one fatally — in an Englewood attack, police said.
At 2:08 a.m., six people were outside in the 5700 block of South LaSalle when another group of people walked out of an alley and started shooting, police said. At least one person in the first group returned fire.
Charles Lewis, 28, was shot in the chest and taken to Saint Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center, where he was pronounced dead at 4:29 a.m., authorities said. His home address was not immediately known.
A 19-year-old woman whose face was grazed by a bullet was also taken to Saint Bernard, police said. She was listed in serious condition.
A 29-year-old woman shot in the face was taken in serious condition to Mount Sinai Hospital, as was a 28-year-old woman who suffered a graze wound to the buttocks. Her condition stabilized, police said.
A 29-year-old man shot in the arm and leg was taken to Stroger Hospital along with a 23-year-old woman shot in the left foot. Their conditions also stabilized, police said.
Six people in a vehicle caught in the crossfire were also taken to hospitals when the car flipped over.
A police source said the 29-year-old man who was wounded and taken to Stroger is a convicted felon with an extensive gang history, and may have been the intended target of the shooting.
Saturday evening in Kenwood, a teenage boy was killed and another wounded in a drive-by attack, police said.
The boys, 14 and 15, were outside in the 4400 block of South Greenwood at 7:30 p.m. when someone fired from a passing car, police said.
The younger boy, identified as Tyjuan Poindexter of the 1200 block of East 46th Street, was shot in the head and died at the scene at 8:01 p.m., according to the medical examiner's office.
Witnesses told officers there'd been an altercation in a nearby park before the shooting, but it wasn't clear whether that was connected to the killing.
About 6 p.m. in Humboldt Park, a 38-year-old man was fatally shot.
He was standing with a group of people in the 1200 block of North Keeler when two people walked up and started shooting.
The man was shot in the back of the neck and pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Officials have not released his name.
The weekend's first gun slaying happened in East Garfield Park about 8:15 p.m. Friday.
Two men, ages 27 and 34, were outside in the 3400 block of West Flournoy when they heard shots and felt pain, police said. They ran into a nearby building and collapsed.
The younger man, later identified as Torrence Bearden of the 700 block of North Harding, was shot in the chest and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, authorities said. He died there at 10:06 p.m. Sunday.
The older man was shot in the leg and taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized, police said.
Both men have documented gang ties, police said.
The most recent non-fatal shooting happened about 1 a.m. Monday in the Back of the Yards neighborhood.
A 23-year-old man was outside in the 5400 block of South Laflin when he heard shots and realized a bullet had grazed his hip. He took himself to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was listed in good condition, police said.
Less than an hour earlier, errant gunfire hurt a 53-year-old man inside a Humboldt Park neighborhood home.
About 12:15 a.m., one of the man's relatives was on the front porch of the home in the 4200 block of West Thomas when someone walked up and started shooting.
A stray bullet went through a window and grazed the 53-year-old's head, police said. He was treated and released at the scene.
At least 36 other people were shot across Chicago in separate attacks since 7:20 p.m. Friday.
