72-Year-Old Man Dies After Branch Falls On Car
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Chicago man died on Tuesday, a day after a tree limb fell on his car during a powerful storm that hammered the Chicago area.
As CBS 2's Pamela Jones reports, Daniel Toro, 72, was the first confirmed storm-related death from Monday's thunderstorm, which brought devastating winds to the Chicago area.
Toro, a retired factory worker, was driving his 2000 Lexus along the 3000 block of West Ogden Avenue on Monday night when a tree branch fell onto the car, slicing through the roof.
"A tree came down. I don't know if it was a branch or the whole tree, but it came down and it went through the sunroof and … it broke his femur," his daughter Monica Toro said. "He was still coherent, he was talking, he was just complaining that it hurt."
His family said Toro died after complications from surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital on Tuesday afternoon. Relatives said the tree branch broke his thigh.
Toro left behind a wife, seven children and 10 grandchildren. His family said he was born in Puerto Rico and was very active in his community.
Most of his family was too upset to talk about his death on Tuesday.
