7 Dead, 22 Injured In Weekend Violence
CHICAGO (CBS) -- It was another violent weekend on the streets of Chicago, with seven people dead as a result of gun violence and 21 more hurt in shootings, stabbings and other violent acts.
The earliest incident happened in broad daylight Friday in the southwest corner of the West Rogers Park neighborhood – an area where reports of violent crime are scarce.
Two teenage boys were walking in the 3100 block of West Peterson Avenue – near the busy junction with Lincoln Avenue – when they encountered another group around 4:30 p.m. Friday. Words were exchanged, and someone took out a gun and shot the two boys.
Sergio Torrez, 15, of the 6700 block of North Maplewood Avenue, was hit in the back, police said. He was pronounced dead at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston at 5 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. The other boy, also 15, was grazed in the arm and treated at St. Francis Hospital.
The next deadly incident happened just before midnight on Friday night. Marquis Strong, 26, was shot in the chest in the 500 block of East 65th Street in the West Woodlawn neighborhood.
Strong, of the 7100 block of South Yates Boulevard, was pronounced dead at 12:25 a.m. at Stroger Hospital of Cook County, according to the medical examiner's office. Further details on his shooting were not available Monday morning.
About 5:20 a.m. Saturday, police found Cynthia Barnes, 39, dead on a sidewalk on the 5800 block of South Kedzie Avenue in the Gage Park neighborhood.
An autopsy Sunday found that she died in a fall from a building on that block and her death was ruled a homicide, the medical examiner's office said.
Police said a 28-year-old man also fell from a third floor window at that building. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in an unknown condition. No arrests had been announced as of Sunday night.
About 6:20 p.m. Saturday, a 53-year-old woman -- identified by the medical examiner's office as Robin Winston -- was shot on the street in the 5800 block of West Thomas Street in the South Austin neighborhood, police News Affairs Officer Ronald Gaines said. The shooting happened outside the woman's home, authorities said.
Winston, of the 1100 block of North Menard Avenue around the corner from the Thomas Street address, died about a half hour later at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood.
About 8:15 p.m., a man identified by the medical examiner's office as Floyd Peterson, 32, was shot in the chest in the 400 block of East 74th Street in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood, Gaines said. He was pronounced dead at 12:31 a.m. Sunday at Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
About 10:45 p.m. Saturday, Sean Avery, 22, was fatally shot while standing in a yard near his home in the 8200 block of South East End Avenue in the Avalon Park neighborhood. Police said a 41-year-old man was also wounded in the shooting.
About 3:20 a.m. Sunday, police found a man -- identified by the medical examiner's office as Beto Rodriguez, 28, -- fatally shot in the head in the 4900 block of South Wolcott Avenue in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, police News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak said.
At least 21 other people were wounded, but not killed, in shootings and stabbings on the South and West sides this weekend.
• Two men were wounded in a shooting in the Marquette Park neighborhood early Saturday. The shooting occurred about 1:15 a.m. Saturday on the 6100 block of South Talman Avenue, police said. A 35-year-old man was shot in the chin and abdomen and a 36-year-old man was shot in the back.
• A gunman fired into a group of people on the 1200 block of South Independence Boulevard in the North Lawndale neighborhood about 1:55 a.m. Saturday and struck two women, ages 19 and 22. The 19-year-old woman was critically wounded while the 22-year-old was in good condition with a gunshot to an arm.
• A man in his 20s was shot in the chest and buttocks about 3 a.m. Saturday on the 5100 block of West Monroe Street in the South Austin neighborhood. He was taken to Loretto Hospital in critical condition. A man in his 30s was also wounded in the shooting, he was taken to Loretto Hospital in fair condition with a gunshot to his thigh.
• About 8 p.m. Saturday, a man in his 30s was shot in the 3700 block of West Grand Avenue in the Humboldt Park neighborhood, and taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County in stable condition, police said.
• About 1:30 a.m. Sunday, a 17-year-old boy was shot in the legs in the 1300 block of North Mayfield Avenue in the North Austin neighborhood, police said. He was hospitalized in good condition.
• About the same time, a 27-year-old man was shot in the head in the 11100 block of South Homewood Avenue in the Morgan Park neighborhood, police said. He was listed in "stable" condition at MetroSouth Medical Center in Blue Island.
• Two women were hospitalized after being stabbed with knives in separate incidents Sunday morning in the Garfield Park neighborhood. About 8 a.m., a 45-year-old woman was arrested following a fight that occurred outside a motel at 4503 W. Washington Blvd., according to Harrison District police Lt. John Andrews.
The older woman allegedly confronted the 38-year-old victim who was sitting in a car and they began arguing about a "former incident,'' according to Andrews. The 45-year-old woman then "took out a knife and stabbed her in the chest,'' he said.
Police were summoned and the victim was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where she was in serious condition, being treated for a stab wound to the left chest area, the lieutenant said.
The suspect was not charged as of early Sunday afternoon but remained in custody. It was not immediately known what they were fighting about.
Another stabbing occurred at 3:45 a.m. in the 3800 block of West Wilcox Street just outside Garfield Park.
Three female victims told police they were "hanging" on the corner of Springfield and Madison when a 22-year-old man who was unknown to them, except for a nickname, walked up to them and allegedly said: "You b----,'' to one of them, Andrews said. The man's accomplice, a 20-year-old woman, started to fight with the three females and "pulled out a knife with a black handle'' and cut one of the three in the face, chest, right arm and right leg, according to Andrews.
She was also taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where she was in good condition, though she had to have several stitches. No one was in custody for the Wilcox incident.
• On Sunday evening, three young men were wounded in a shooting in the Marquette Park neighborhood. About 6:30 p.m., the three -- ages 15, 16, and 28 -- were shot on the 6900 block of South Talman Avenue, according to police News Affairs Officer Daniel O'Brien.
Two of the victims were taken to Holy Cross Hospital and one was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to O'Brien. It was not known yet which victims were taken to which hospital. According to unconfirmed dispatch reports the 15-year-old was shot in the buttocks and the 16-year-old was shot in the leg. None of the injuries were believed to be life-threatening, O'Brien said.
• Around 9:10 p.m. Sunday, a man was shot and wounded at 50th Street and Marshfield Avenue in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. The victim, an adult male whose age was not known, suffered a gunshot wound to the hip area and was hospitalized in stable condition, police said.
