6th-Grader Gets Perfect SAT Math Score
BUFFALO GROVE, Ill. (CBS) – The SAT test is tough for high-schoolers looking to get into college. But imagine taking the test as a sixth-grader -- and getting a perfect score.
CBS 2's Marissa Bailey traveled to the suburbs to quiz this kid.
In the sea of teens at Twin Groves Middle School, one in particular stands out: Joshua Yoon.
He took the SATs in February, and while he says the writing portion was a bit tough he scored a perfect 800 on math.
"Afterwards, I thought I did pretty good," Joshua modestly tells CBS 2's Marissa Bailey says.
Joshua's humble, serious demeanor is most likely what scored him perfection.
The 12-year-old says he was bored with lessons that were too easy and started working on math problems two years ahead of his curriculum.
"We got the textbook for the seventh-grade math, and I just looked at that," Joshua says.
Joshua's math teacher says he taught himself Algegbra 2.
He is an only child and his parents say they couldn't be more proud of him. He says he wants to be a doctor or a basketball player or baseball player when he grows up.
