6 Wounded In Shootings Since Wednesday Afternoon
CHICAGO (STMW) -- Six people were wounded in shootings across the city since Wednesday afternoon, including a 65-year-old man and two teenage boys, Chicago Police said.
The shootings came as July drew to a close and police officials announced the number of shootings decreased when compared to the same months in 2012 and 2011. According to the statistics, there were also two fewer murders compared to the same period last year, and 8 fewer murders than in July 2011.
"Chicago finished the first seven months of 2013 down 23 percent in shootings, down 25 percent in murders and down 15 percent in overall crime compared to the same time period last year," police spokesman Adam Collins said in the statement.
The most recent shooting occurred early Thursday on the West Side when a bullet struck a 26-year-old man in the leg about 3:13 a.m. in the Garfield Park neighborhood, police said.
The man was in the 4000 block of West Jackson Boulevard when he was shot, police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, though he was not seriously wounded.
Several hours earlier, a teenage boy was shot in the leg in the Northwest Side Belmont-Cragin neighborhood about 9:50 p.m. Wednesday, police said.
The 17-year-old was on the sidewalk in the 2100 block of North Mulligan Street when a male gunman got out of a gray four-door sedan and started shooting, police said. One of the bullets struck the boy in the left thigh. He was in good condition at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.
An hour prior on the South Side another 17-year-old boy was shot, police said -- this time in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood. The boy was in the 7000 block of South Perry Avenue about 8:50 p.m. when bullets hit him in the backside and ankle, police said. He was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County in "stable" condition.
On the West Side a 24-year-old man was wounded in a drive-by shooting while standing outside his Lawndale neighborhood home about 8:30 p.m., police said.
The man told police gunfire erupted from a dark-colored SUV that passed by him in the 2700 block of West 24th Street. The man found his own ride to Mount Sinai Hospital after a bullet pierced his leg, police said. He was in good condition.
Wednesday afternoon a man was shot in West Englewood about 4:30 p.m. in the 5800 block of South Winchester Avenue, police said.
Few details were available, but the man, believed to be 35, was taken in "stable" condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, police said.
A 65-year-old man was shot in the face Wednesday afternoon in the Chatham neighborhood on the South Side about 12:30 p.m., police said.
Paramedic treated the man at the scene of the shooting, in the 8200 block of South Maryland Avenue.
No arrests had been made Thursday morning as detectives investigated the shootings.
