WILL COUNTY, Ill. (CBS) -- Six people were hospitalized for heat exhaustion Monday morning while attending Memorial Day parades in two neighboring suburbs.
The people were attending parades in Plainfield and Lockport amid temperatures in the 80s on Monday, according to officials in the two suburbs.
Plainfield fire officials said all six people were treated and stabilized at two Joliet hospitals – Silver Cross Hospital and Provena St. Joseph Medical Center.
Four people who had been at the Lockport parade were taken to Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet around 11 a.m. after suffering from heat-related issues. They were in stable condition Monday afternoon.
Two others were hospitalized for heat-related issues at the Plainfield parade. They were taken to St. Joseph for treatment.
The morning was sunny and warm throughout the area, with temperatures already reaching the 80s at 10 a.m., when the parades started.
High temperatures rose into the 90s. In Chicago, parents of young children were taking precautions to make sure the kids stayed cool.
Little Everett Youkilis was getting a taste of what his very first summer will feel like. His parents were making sure he eased into it.
"Lots of sunscreen. They're sensitive little guys," dad Scott Youkilis told CBS 2's Dana Kozlov.
