6 Arrested At Anti-Deportation Protest In Broadview

BROADVIEW, Ill. (WBBM) -- As many as six people were arrested during a protest Friday morning against current U.S. immigration laws at the Deportation Detention Center in Broadview.

As WBBM Newsradio 780's Dave Berner reports, more than 200 people stood in the rain as a bus carrying deportees left the detention center, at 1930 Beach St. in Broadview, and headed for O'Hare International Airport.

As the bus pulled away, several protesters dropped to the street and stretched out on the ground to block the bus.

One of the protesters was the Rev. José Landaverde of the Our Lady of Guadalupe Anglican Catholic Church in the Little Village neighborhood.

"We cannot tolerate the deportations any longer, and we don't want families to be separated," Landaverde said.

Police calmly and peacefully removed each of the protesters, taking them to the Broadview Police Station.

The intention of the protest was to shine a light on what the demonstrators called unfair immigration and deportation laws.
