$5M In Unpaid Tolls Collected From Indiana Drivers
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (CBS/WBBM) -- Officials say the State of Illinois has taken in nearly $5 million from Indiana drivers who didn't pay their tolls.
The Illinois Toll Highway Authority caused a commotion in Indiana last summer, when it sent out 85,000 notices to Hoosiers who breezed through booths and open tolling lanes.

Indiana drivers originally owed $7 million in missed tolls and fines. But officials say the amount they recovered is still more than they expected to collect.
The tollway sent out 85,000 past-due bills in Indiana in August. The bills involved missed tolls and fines dating to May 2008.
Steps have now been taken to prevent the toll violation notice system from inadvertently being deactivated. Policies have also been updated for settling outstanding tolls and penalties.
