5 Possible White Sox September Additions
(CBS) White Sox general manager Rick Hahn confirmed this week that the team intends on calling up between five and eight prospects in September when the rosters expand. While he didn't reveal who exactly that would be, here are five players who will likely get a long look.
Andy Wilkins
Out of everyone in Chicago's system, Wilkins has earned a promotion, hitting an International League-best 29 homers this season. With Adam Dunn out of the picture moving forward, it would seem prudent to take a look at Wilkins' big lefty bat. Problem, of course, is there's not much playing time available at first base with Jose Abreu locked in there for another five years, so Wilkins would either need to get at-bats as a designated hitter, move positions or move organizations in the future.
Carlos Rodon
With highly touted second baseman prospect Micah Johnson out the rest of the season with a strained left hamstring, Rodon is really the only player to stoke excitement in White Sox fans. Rodon was the third overall pick in June's amateur draft, and he's on the fast track because of his talent and three years spent at N.C. State. Hahn has said the team is open to brining him up in September, when he'd likely pitch out of the bullpen before moving to the rotation next season.
Marcus Semien
A 23-year-old infielder, Semien already had 165 at-bats for the White Sox earlier this season, playing primarily at second base. He got sent down because he only hit .218 with three homers and 18 RBIs, but the front office would be well served to further evaluate him, given that current second baseman Gordon Beckham is could exit town this offseason. Semien has hit .252 with 10 homers and 42 RBIs in 73 games at Triple-A Charlotte this season.
Carlos Sanchez
Sanchez is a 22-year-old second baseman/shortstop who's been steady all year at Triple-A Charlotte, where he's batted .293 with seven homers and 57 RBIs and a .761 OPS in 100 games. Save fora short July call-up in which he had five at-bats, Sanchez has been in Triple-A since 2012, so it's starting to feel like now or never for his next step in the White Sox organization. It's time to take a longer look.
Jared Mitchell
A 25-year-old outfielder, Mitchell has just a .228 average in his stint at Charlotte this year, but he's swinging better of late. In a combined 109 games at Double-A and Triple-A this year, Mitchell has 17 homers and 44 RBIs.
