5 Killed, More Than 30 Wounded In Violent Chicago Weekend

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Five people were killed and at least 30 others were wounded in violence across the city between Friday morning and early Monday morning.
The deaths included a woman who was killed by a relative in Logan Square, a man killed in a gang-related shooting near Lake View High School, a security guard stabbed and shot at a West Side gas station, and a man who was shot to death on the South Side a couple of days after being released from jail, and one of two men who was shot in an incident in Albany Park.
The wounded included at least 12 teens ages 14 to 18.
The earliest reported deadly shooting happened around 6 a.m. Friday, when William Newell, 29, was chased and gunned down near his home in the 7900 block of South Drexel Avenue in the East Chatham neighborhood, police said.
Newell was a parolee who had been released from custody Wednesday.
He had been serving a two-year sentence for possession of a controlled substance but was paroled on Aug. 25. But he was arrested again on Sept. 16 for possession of a controlled substance, only to be released Wednesday after a judge found no probable cause for the arrest, officials said.
Another fatal shooting happened around 1:30 a.m. Saturday, on the northwest edge of the Lakeview neighborhood near Lake View High School. In that incident, Louis Cotto, 29, was with a group of people standing on a corner at Ashland Avenue and Irving Park Road when someone walked up and fired shots into the group, police said.
Cotto, 29, of Barrington, was hit in the chest and died. The shooter fled in a dark-colored sport-utility vehicle. Police believe the shooting was gang-related.
In a third incident at 4 a.m. Saturday, security guard Dennis Fox, 53, was shot and stabbed by a man he had asked to leave a Citgo gas station at 415 S. Pulaski Rd. in the East Garfield Park neighborhood, police said. Fox was dead on the scene, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
Kaz Link, 33, of the 4200 block of West Jackson Boulevard, was charged with the murder soon afterward.
About 4:40 a.m. Saturday, Francisco Martinez, 28, and his younger sister, Isabella Martinez, 22, got into an argument in their home in the 2300 block of North Harding Avenue in the Logan Square neighborhood.
Francisco had been drinking and partying in the backyard when Isabella told him to keep it down, and when he ignored her, she got their older sister, Erminia Martinez, 35, the Chicago Tribune reported. Police said Francisco became enraged and shot both women.
Isabella Martinez was pronounced dead at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center at 9:15 a.m. Saturday. Erminia was in serious condition at Illinois Masonic.
Most recently, one man died and another was wounded in a shooting on the southern edge of the Albany Park neighborhood.
The shooting happened on the 4000 block of North Bernard Street about 4:10 p.m. Sunday, according to police News Affairs Officer Darryl Baety.
The victims, an 18-year-old and a 26-year-old, were walking down the street when a vehicle approached and an occupant fired several shots in their direction, a report from police News Affairs said.
The older victim, Jose Cisneros of the 3800 block of North Sawyer Avenue, was pronounced dead at 6:27 p.m. at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. He was shot in the back, police said.
The 18-year-old was struck in the left leg and left arm. He was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where his condition was stable, police said.
Other shootings across the city this weekend include:
• About 3:45 p.m. Friday, a 31-year-old man and a 14-year-old boy walking home from school were shot near East 77th Street and South Kingston Avenue, police said. The man was arguing with the gunman, who began shooting and also struck the teen boy.
The teen was shot in the torso and taken in critical condition to the University of Chicago Medical Center, police said. The man was shot multiple times and taken in critical condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
• About 9:30 p.m. Friday, a 20-year-old man was "handling" a gun that accidentally discharged and shot a 15-year-old boy in the 7900 block of South Christiana Avenue, police said.
The boy was taken in fair condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with a gunshot wound to the abdomen area, police said.
The man, Clifton Barnes, of the 7900 block of South Christiana Avenue, was charged with one count each of reckless conduct and not having a valid Firearm Owner's Identification card, police said.
• About 9:50 p.m., a 16- and 17-year-old boy sitting in a purple Dodge Caravan were shot in the 3200 block of Cermak Road by somebody in a passing vehicle, police said. Both were in "guarded but stable condition."
The early hours of Saturday were an especially violent period.
• About 1:25 a.m., a 17-year-old boy in the back seat of a vehicle in the 7400 block of South Blackstone Avenue was shot by a gunman who approached the vehicle on foot and opened fire, police said.
Witnesses drove the boy to University of Chicago Medical Center, and he was later transferred in serious condition to Mount Sinai Hospital, police said.
• About five minutes later, three men approached a 56-year-old man in the 4100 block of West Adams Street and shot him in the right leg and left arm, police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai in "stable" condition.
• Around the same time, a 16-year-old boy and 20-year-old man standing in the 13200 block of South Langley Avenue when a group of males chasing another group opened fire on them, police said.
The boy was shot in the leg and taken in good condition to Roseland Community Hospital, while the man was shot in the abdomen area and taken in good condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to police.
• About 2:15 a.m., a boy and girl, both 17, were shot while walking in the 1300 block of East 75th Street, police said.
The girl was shot in the foot and boy suffered a graze wound to the leg, police said. Both were taken in good condition to Jackson Park Hospital and Medical Center.
• About 30 minutes later, a male was shot in the 7100 block of South Halsted Street, police said.
• About 4:30 a.m., another male was shot in the 2100 block of South Western Avenue.
• Saturday afternoon, a 15-year-old girl was wounded in a shooting in the Northwest Side Hermosa neighborhood.
The shooting occurred on the 2000 block of North Kostner Avenue about 12:25 p.m. The girl siffered a gunshot wound to the upper right leg, police said. She was taken to Children's Memorial Hospital and her condition was stable.
• Two men were wounded in separate shootings in the Back of the Yards neighborhood late Saturday and early Sunday on the South Side.
The first shooting happened about 11:20 p.m. Saturday when a 31-year-old man was standing in the 6000 block of South Damen Avenue and two males approached on foot and fired at him, police said. The man was shot in the hip and back and was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. of Cook County Hospital in serious condition.
Another man, 26, was shot in the neck about 1:49 a.m. Sunday in the 5100 block of South Ada Street, police said. He was standing on the sidewalk with several people when someone fired shots. He was also taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition.
• A 16-year-old boy was shot in Uptown in a possibly gang-related attack Saturday night on the North Side.
It happened about 7:15 p.m. at 4157 N. Clarendon Ave., according to a Town Hall District police captain.
The victim was in serious condition when he was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Kevin MacGregor said.
• A man was seriously wounded Saturday night in the South Shore neighborhood.
The shooting occurred at 10:35 p.m. in the 7500 block of South East End Avenue, according to police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro.
• A man, in his 20s, suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the lower body and was taken in serious condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
• A male was critically injured when he was stabbed multiple times Sunday night in the Far South Side West Pullman neighborhood.
The male – whose age was not immediately available – was stabbed multiple times in his arms and legs at 10:06 p.m. by two people in the 12000 block of South Michigan Avenue, according to police News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
• A 24-year-old man was critically wounded in a shooting in the Far South Side Roseland neighborhood late Sunday.
The man was exiting a car at 11:41 p.m. in an alley in the 10900 block of South Eggleston Avenue when a male suspect fired several shots, hitting him in the abdomen, police said.
He was taken in critical condition to Christ Medical Center, police said.
